Post-graduate law students and faculty from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) Law School recently completed an experiential study tour at the World Trade Organization (WTO) headquarters in Geneva, taking international trade law education beyond the traditional classroom setting.
The delegation, comprising students enrolled in GIMPA’s LL.M. in International Trade and Business Law program, engaged directly with trade diplomats, legal experts, and institutional leaders responsible for shaping global economic governance.
A key highlight of the tour was when WTO Director-General Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala publicly acknowledged the visiting Ghanaian delegation, commending the students’ “interest and enthusiasm” in mastering the mechanics of the multilateral trading system.
The visit carries distinct strategic importance given Ghana’s role as the host nation for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat. As Africa continues implementing the world’s largest free-trade area by participating countries, legal observers emphasize an urgent need for African trade lawyers, negotiators, and policymakers who can comfortably navigate both regional and multilateral trade architectures.
By embedding high-level institutional access directly into its curriculum, GIMPA’s international trade law program is positioning its cohort at the centre of Africa’s evolving trade landscape.
