GIMPA SPORTS UNIT
The GIMPA Sports Unit under the Office of the Dean of Students was established in 2021 to manage sports activities in the Institute. In 2021 the first Sport Coordinator of GIMPA was appointed. The establishment of the Institute’s sports section is consistent with the Institute’s corporate strategic plan which seeks to transform and professionalize human resource practices and review governance for effective and efficient management. Subsequently, the Institute’s Sports advisory board was constituted under the Chairmanship of the Dean of Student for Academic/Student Affairs. Alongside the Advisory board, a Sports Management Committee was formed and is headed by the Sport’s coordinator of the Institute. The Sports Management Committee is responsible for planning, organizing and coordinating all sporting activities of the GIMPA community, namely Senior Members, Students and Junior/Senior Staff. The sport’s directorate is the delivery arm of the Sports Management Committee.
The mission of GIMPA Sports Unit seeks “to enhance the fitness, health, well-being and holistic development of students, staff and the University Community, through participation in worthwhile sporting and recreational activities, and endeavor to become the leader for change in the academic discipline and profession of Sports, in partnership with relevant stakeholders“.
GIMPA Hockey Queens suffer last-gasp defeat to Select Professional side in a friendly match
GIMPA’s Hockey Queens endured a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to a Professional select side from South Africa in an international friendly at the Theodosia Okoh National Hockey Stadium in Accra, with substitute Sakina Diki scoring a stoppage-time winner. Diki’s 70th minute strike from a well-executed corner kick sealed victory for the International Select side on Saturday, 22nd February, 2025. This marginal defeat however has boosted the GIMPA Women’s team confidence ahead of the upcoming 2025 Women Youth tournament to be held in March, 2025.
For the GIMPA team, the match marked the debut of newly selected hockey players assembled few days earlier. The GIMPA Queens adopted a cautious approach, showing defensive resilience against a dominant experienced Professional side. The GIMPA Goalkeeper produced a series of outstanding saves to keep the game level for most of the contest. While the result was disappointing, the match served as a vital test for Coach Kojo Lumor to assess his squad as they continue their preparations for the Youth Tournament.
