The Department of Liberal Arts and Hospitality Studies (LAHS) was established in September 2023. It was formerly the Department of Liberal Arts and Communication Studies (LACS). The change of name is to reflect the new strategic direction of the Institute following the merger of the School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (SOLASS) and School of Technology (SOT) now known and called School of Technology and Social Sciences (SOTSS). The department is one of the three departments in the School of Technology and Social Sciences (SOTSS).

The Department of Liberal Arts and Hospitality Studies (LAHS) wishes to use this cherished opportunity to welcome you to our portal. The Department provides a conducive teaching, learning, training, and research environment for our students and our general clientele. We cherish our relationship and collaboration with our stakeholders. Their contributions continue to add value to our program offerings across the spectrum. We place so much premium on our students, faculty, staff and the general public because they are our greatest assets.

In particular, we prioritise quality and offer our students and other stakeholders memorable experiences once they come into contact with us. This starts right from enquiries about admissions to their recruitment, training, placement and alumni engagements. Besides, we have strong and dynamic alumni who willingly offer mentorship to up-and-coming graduates.

We pride ourselves on being part of the cog that delivers excellence to stakeholders in businesses and the professions – both at the local, national and international levels. We also support community engagements using a variety of tools and consultancy services. The Department emphasizes research and innovations. Our overarching objective is to develop a niche in the liberal arts, communication and hospitality field.

About the Department

The Department of Liberal Arts and Hospitality Studies (LAHS) was established in September 2023. It was formerly the Department of Liberal Arts and Communication Studies (LACS). The change of name is to reflect the new strategic direction of the Institute following the merger of the School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (SOLASS) and School of Technology (SOT) now known and called School of Technology and Social Sciences (SOTSS). The department is one of the three departments in the School of Technology and Social Sciences (SOTSS). The other two are the Department of Economics and Applied Mathematics and the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems.

The Department of Liberal Arts and Hospitality Studies runs three programmes – one undergraduate and two graduate programmes on a semester and trimester basis. These are:

  1. A four/two-year Bachelor of Science in Tourism and Hospitality Management;
  2. A one-year Master of Arts in Development Communication; and
  3. A one-year Master of Arts in Public Relations

The Department of LAHS is also home to some General Education Courses (University required courses) in the undergraduate programmes. We service these courses at the other Schools namely: GIMPA Law School (GLS), GIMPA Business School (GBS), and the School of Public Service and Governance (SPSG). Some of these General Education courses for which we provide teaching support to other Schools in the Institute are:

Areas of expertise

It has some of the most experienced and highly qualified faculty who combine theory with application.  We boast of some of the most experienced faculty in the Department and School. As a leader in the provision of Liberal Arts, Communication and Hospitality Studies education, our research and innovative approaches have been valuable to our students and customers across diverse fields. BSc. (Hons) Tourism and Hospitality Management

The undergraduate BSc in Hospitality and Tourism Studies program provides students with a broad foundation in hospitality management, event planning, tourism trends, and entrepreneurship. It equips graduates with the skills and knowledge necessary for leadership roles in the dynamic hospitality and tourism industry.

ONE YEAR MASTER PROGRAMMES (Weekends)

M.A. Development Communication

The one-year Master of Arts in Development Communication is a very flexible but rich trimester programme. It is a unique programme designed to address development challenges and to close the poverty gap. Its strength is undergirded by the matrices of Indigenous Knowledge (IK) and Information Communication Technology (ICT). It is driven by nuanced diffused development communication strategies to galvanize multifaceted development at the community, national and international levels.
The programme develops synergies for sustainable development approaches and knowledge transfer for secured livelihoods. It adopts new trajectories and places emphasis on critical analysis, case studies and application of development and communication strategies within contexts. The programme positions participants for careers in both local and international Governmental and Non-Governmental Organizations and for self-employment as entrepreneurs.

Stakeholder Engagement; Development Communication Strategies; Health Communication; NGOs Management and Development; Documentary Production and Microfinance and Credit for Development among others.
Admission Requirements:
An applicant to the MA in Development Communication and Public Relations programmes is required to have earned a bachelor’s degree or the equivalent as follows:
  • The applicant must have a good first degree with a minimum of 2nd Class Lower Division minimum OR
  • Third Class with considerable industrial experience in the related field

M.A. Public Relations

The Master of Arts in Public Relations is also a one-year stress-free trimester programme designed to address specific needs in the public relations industry. It has cutting-edge design and execution strategies. The emphasis is on the quality application of scientific research tools using ICT as the key driver to impact the PR industry, management and administration as a whole. We train graduates who are research-minded, critical thinkers, problem-solvers, and ready to meet the greater challenges of the 21st century. As part of the social contract, we train and prepare graduates/professionals to become entrepreneurs and innovators and to take up managerial roles in both the private and public sectors.


Programme Highlights:

Corporate Communications; Protocol and Event Management; Integrated Marketing Communications; Public Speaking and Presentation Skills; Stakeholder Engagement; Documentary Production; Crisis Communication; and International Public Relations among others.

What is the duration of your degree programmes?

Undergraduate programmes are usually 4 years. Masters programmes are for 1 or 2 years, depending on the programme. Post Graduate Diploma programmes are usually a year. However, you are encouraged to confirm with your prospective secretariat as some programmes may have a unique timeline.
