GIMPA Ladies Organise Discussion on Marriage, Divorce and Widowhood.

Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration Ladies has organised an insightful discussion on marriage, divorce and widowhood, bringing together legal practitioners, academics and participants to examine the social, legal and economic dimensions of family life and relationships.

The programme provided a platform for engaging conversations on issues affecting women in marriage and widowhood, while offering practical guidance on property ownership, legal rights and financial security.

Speaking during the opening session on behalf of the men, Dr. Nana Aseni, a Senior Lecturer at the GIMPA School of Technology, commended the growth and impact of GIMPA Ladies within the institution. He encouraged women at GIMPA to continue striving for excellence, noting that admiration and learning should replace envy in professional and personal development.

Dr. Aseni also reflected on the values and life lessons imparted to him by his late mother, sharing how her love and guidance shaped his life and the impact of her passing.

During the discussion, speakers emphasised that marriage is not only an emotional union but also an economic partnership. Participants were educated on constitutional provisions that encourage women to acquire property before or during marriage as a means of securing their future.

The speakers further explained that individuals who own property without clearly establishing ownership may be deemed to hold such property in trust for their spouses. Participants were therefore advised to maintain proper records and documentation of their contributions and activities within marriage, as legal processes are largely evidence-based.

Discussions also focused on jointly acquired property and the legal rights of women following the death of a spouse. Participants were encouraged to take the necessary legal steps to claim properties belonging to deceased spouses where applicable.

Distinguished speakers at the event included Hon. Diana Asonaba Dapaah, Dr. Enam Antonio, Dr. Nana Ama, Miss Jennifer Owusu, Mrs. Odelia Ntiamoah and Dr. Nana Aseni.

The programme forms part of GIMPA Ladies’ ongoing commitment to promoting awareness, mentorship and empowerment through dialogue on issues affecting women and society.
