GIMPA Trains its Risk Management Champions and Owners

GHANA INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT AND PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION (GIMPA)

By Joyce Boahemaa Fosu

The GIMPA Enterprise Risk Management Team (GERMC) developed and implemented an effective Enterprise Risk Management Framework under the auspices of Central Administration and the GIMPA Governing Council. This framework complies with the ISO 31000 Risk Management Standards and operates within the Governance, Risk Management, and Compliance (GRC) framework. This training of risk champions and selected risk owners was the third phase of GERMC’s strategic roadmap of operationalising the Institute’s risk management framework across all the functional Units. This interactive training was designed to equip these risk champions and owners, such as Directors, Deans, Department heads, Assistant Registrars, administrative staff, and lecturers, with the requisite hands-on skills to effectively identify and manage material risks arising from their various functional Units’ operations and external factors.

The training addressed a range of topics, including creation of risk registers and the deliverables associated with the enterprise risk management process. In light of the engaged learning approach of the training, some risk champions and owners from various functional units have already started updating their risk registers, while others have initiated the process of creating their own registers. These activities and actions are intended to rationalize the submission of monthly risk highlights and quarterly risk management reports to the GIMPA Enterprise Risk Management Team. The team will synthesize these reports for onward submission to the Central Administration and the Audit Committee of the Governing Council at GIMPA.

The training was led by Dr. Francis Atsu, the head of the GIMPA Enterprise Risk Management Team. Dr. Atsu brings a wealth of expertise to the table, being a certified Financial Risk Manager (FRM) and a certified Sustainability and Climate Risk Professional accredited by the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP) in the USA. Furthermore, he is an Agile Scrum Professional and a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Finance and Accounting at the GIMPA Business School.
